MEMBERS of a town dance club swapped their dancing shoes for trainers in memory of their much-loved mentor.

Freda Compton – who founded the Elwick Academy of Dance in 1949 – taught thousands of Hartlepool youngsters and was a familiar face on the local dancing circuit.

She died in September 2010 after battling cancer.

Yesterday, some of her young proteges ran the Race for Life in her memory and raised around £500 for the cause.

One of the Elwick Academy members said: “We did the run for Miss Compton, and it was nice to raise money at the same time.

“We even managed to get some of the dance moves she taught us into the run!”
