EASINGTON Aged Miners proudly remembered their popular former treasurer by unveiling a plaque in his name.

Cyril Kenneth Dunn served the organisation from 1988 up until his death in June last year aged 72.

And they have recognised his contribution by unveiling a plaque in Rutherford House in Seaside Lane, Easington.

About 100 of his friends and family gathered for the event in the retirement home that stands proudly not far from Cyril’s beloved Welfare Hall.

Cyril’s widow, Anne, 72, told how she was “overwhelmed” by the effort people had put in to remember her husband.

“It was brilliant to see so many people there,” she added.

“The whole family are very proud of what Cyril (pictured) has done for this community and I am very happy that people recognise it.

“The plaque is in the best spot it could be and it is a fantastic tribute to a wonderful man.”

Durham Aged Miners Homes Association grew from the vision of a former worker who believed that the people of the community who served in the pit should live in better conditions.

And Cyril shared that vision with his colleagues from the colliery.

Cyril’s son, Michael, 47, echoed his mother’s words.

He said: “There have been so many tributes in the past year that it is amazing.

“The family know how important he was to the community and it is fantastic to see the Aged Miners pay their respects in this way.

“We could not thank them enough. The plaque is in a very nice place that I know my dad was very pleased with and his work will always be recognised.”

The event was hosted by Aged Miners’ president Gordon Parkin, 62, who has been on the Easington Aged Miners committee since 1980.

Gordon got to know Cyril through working with him for many years and it was a “proud moment” to show how much he was appreciated.

His introduction before Anne unveiled the plaque was one of pride as he said he “misses a dear friend”.
