A GROUP of college students took the bronze against hundreds of other students in the regional heats of the North-East’s largest hairdressing competition.
The students from East Durham College hair and beauty department competed in 10 different categories in the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) annual colleges competition.
From face and body painting to 1940s make-up, the group of 40 students put on an impressive performance in each category, collecting a number of top four places and finishing third overall.
A particular highlight for the college was taking first and second place in the barbering category of the competition, judged by a panel of experts from the hair and beauty industry.
Danielle Forster took the gold, followed by fellow East Durham College student Ken Ball bagging the silver.
Danielle, 20, said “I’m absolutely thrilled to bits to win first place and I’m so proud of myself as I was competing against many other students from different colleges.”
Ken, 44, said “I’m delighted to get placed again, especially after last year’s win. It just shows how dedicated and helpful my tutors have been.”
Other students to get a top four finish in the competition, which took at the Federation Brewey in Gateshead, were Ashleigh Chapman who took second place in Classical 40s Make-up, Lousia Hutton who took second place in Nail Art, Sara Potts who took second place in Body Art, Lisa Stoker and Jade Garside who took second place in Team Bridal and Donna Slater who took fourth place in Ladies Evening Style.
Head of the hair and beauty department at the college, Simon Smith, said “There were some tremendous individual performances and despite not repeating last year’s first place in the team event, it was a great effort by all our students that took part.”
The top four finishers have now qualified to compete in the AHT National Final at The Blackpool Winter Gardens Hair Festival, which will be held on Sunday, March 11, and Monday, March 12.
