The North East will be showcasing its young talent when future stars walk the boards at the Sunderland Empire.

Talented teenagers are set to be given a taste of Fame when they take part in the hit muscial.

Rosie Diaz is among those preparing to take the stage at the Sunderland Empire in a new production of the classic show.

The production is the seventh from Sunderland Empire Stage Experience, which gives talented youngsters the chance to attend a two-week summer school and perform on the famous stage.

Rosie, 18, from Whitburn, has been taking part in rehearsals since July 23, before staging four shows on Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4.

She is among a host of teenagers from the region who are representing towns from Hartlepool to South Shields.

Rosie, who is moving to Los Angeles in October to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, said: “Fame is my favourite musical.

“I absolutely love it and I’m so happy to be part of this production.

“I’ve been in it once before but in a much smaller role and this time I’m playing one of the principal parts, the teacher Miss Sherman.

“This is the first time I’ve been involved in Stage Experience and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I was in Beauty and the Beast last year at the Empire and it’s the biggest stage I’ve ever performed on.

“I can’t wait to get back up there.”

Fame is based on the Academy Award-winning 1980 film that was an instant hit and has become part of popular culture.

It charts the successes and strains of a group of students at New York’s High School for the Performing Arts.

It is set over four years and takes the audience through the highs and lows, pain and triumphs and hard work that is the daily life of star-struck pupils in their quest for success and stardom.

The film was made into a six-series television show in 1982 and premiered as a musical in Miami, Florida in 1988 and has since been staged by numerous professional and amateur groups.

A remake of the film was released in 2009 and the hit song from the show has been recorded by countless artists.

Fame is on from Friday, August 3 to Saturday, August 4, with a 2.30pm and 7.15pm show each day.

Tickets start at £9. To book, call 0844 871 3022.
