Wonders of the plateau

A SERIES of workshops are being held to give people an insight into the wonders of a limestone plateau that stretches from Hartlepool to South Shields.

Durham County Council’s Limestone Landscape Partnership is organising an exciting series of day workshops for adults as part of a Limestone Festival taking place next month.

The workshops, which require no prior knowledge of the subject, will allow participants to learn about the wonders of the plateau.

One of the workshops, called Flowers and Butterflies of the Coast, will be held at Blackhall Community Centre, in Hesleden Road, Blackhall, from 10am-4pm on Saturday, June 23.

Ken Bradshaw, heritage officer with Durham County Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to see and understand the importance of the rare magnesian limestone, whether you are interested in the rocks and fossils, the wildlife or the superb history and heritage of the area.”

All courses are free, part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, but booking is essential.
