Challenge is to make a million

A CHALLENGE with a difference today went out to Hartlepool and east Durham businesses: "Get behind the region's youths and give them a chance of work."

How do you fancy taking a 1,500 investment and turning it into a 10,000 profit – all the while knowing the money will help youths to get a much-needed job?

A drive to do just that was officially launched today by the youth charity The Prince's Trust.

But this is no ordinary challenge. You can raise the profits in any way you like such as by holding a ball with a James Bond theme.

The nationwide Million Makers challenge was unveiled for the first time in an official launch in Gateshead.

Staff from the City of Sunderland College are pictured backing it.

Now comes the call for others to do the same closer to home.

How can you help?

Workers are being asked to turn a Prince's Trust investment of 1,500 into a profit of 10,000 by running mini-enterprises over a six month period.

You might fancy organising a ball with a James Bond theme, a car wash a dress down Friday, golf days or summer barbecue.

They are some of the ideas suggested by the organisers who have carried out similar events in other parts of the region.

Fundraising competitors will change young lives across the North East where 40,000 disadvantaged 14-30 year olds could benefit from the youth charity's help to get them into work, education or training.

The youth charity wants to sign up 10 teams by mid June.

David Beavis, regional director for The Prince's Trust in the North East, said: "With the best of the North East's business brains behind us, we can change young lives.

"Million Makers is also proven to improve teams' confidence and team-working skills, which is more important than ever as companies are forced to cut training budgets during the recession."
