Shake-up at the top for train company
A TRAIN company has undergone a shake-up of its management team.
Arriva UK Trains is changing its leadership team at its Grand Central Railway business with Richard McClean becoming managing director of the open access operator.
It will be on top of his current role as managing director of the group’s Tyne and Wear Metro operation.
He will replace Tom Clift, who is leaving the business, which provides a direct service to London from Hartlepool, later this month.
Mr Clift said: “I have enormous pride in the small, committed and professional team that has worked so hard to make Grand Central the success it is today. I thank them all for their support over the years.”
Mr McClean has more than 30 years’ rail industry experience, including 10 years in inter-city operations on the East Coast Main Line.
Since April 2010 he has led the Tyne and Wear Metro concession, operated on behalf of Nexus, and helped the business achieve the 2011 Light Rail Operator of the Year award.
Mr McClean said: “Grand Central’s passengers, and the communities it serves, are incredibly loyal and this is a credit to Tom and our people who work hard every day to deliver services.
“Tom leaves the business with firm foundations, which we will build upon in the years ahead.”
Sean English, currently Grand Central’s operations director who has been with the company since its launch, will take on the new role of general manager.
Reporting to Mr McClean, he will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of all Grand Central services.
Bob Holland, managing director at Arriva UK Trains, said: “Grand Central complements Arriva‘s existing rail portfolio and under Richard’s leadership, supported by Sean, we look forward to taking the business forward as a commercial open access dimension to our UK rail operations.”
