A group of Year 9 girls from Easington Academy applied to a national competition to promote the participation of girls in engineering and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects.

A video was submitted by the group to a panel of experts explaining what engineering meant to them. They were successful, and won their bid, which secured them a VEX Robotics kit worth £1,000. The team was invited to participate in a regional competition to build a robot which can be remotely controlled and programmed to complete a course. The girls will compete against other local teams and if successful will earn a place at the National VEX Robotics competition which will take place in Birmingham.

Lent services will be held in various churches starting at Easington Village Methodist Church on Thursday at 7pm.

Easington Colliery Primary School Swimming team took part in the Easington School Sport Partnership Swimming Gala at Peterlee Leisure Centre. Twenty-three children represented the school and, once again, the behaviour and effort of all children was superb. They finished in overall third place in the Year 2 event and although the team is not yet aware of its KS2 team final position, everyone competed very well against 14 other schools. A big thank you to the children, staff and parents.

East Durham Association of Town and Parish Councils met in Seaton Holme with representatives of local parishes in attendance. An interesting presentation by Stephen Reed, from Durham County Council, was given on Section 106 procedures where parishes can claim money from builders for sports and recreation. Jason Turnough updated them on AAP schemes.

The Prayer and Praise service will be held in St Mary’s Church on Sunday at 4pm.

Easington Colliery Primary School Cross-Country team was the winner in a number of age groups, for boys and girls, at Easington School Sport Partnership event. The team will represent Easington at the Durham County Finals for cross-country at Parkside School in Willington on Friday, March 11. Years 3/4 boys and Years 3/4 girls teams will compete in the team events while Freya Willis (Year 6) and Courtney Pigford (Year 5) will run for Easington in the individual event.
