A ROYAL Navy officer proved he had a head for heights when he climbed the masts of a historic ship.

Commodore Richard Baum scaled HMS Trincomalee to hoist the Admiral’s flag from the crow’s nest of the famous Hartlepool landmark.

He did it to mark a major event which will take place on the ship in March – which could in itself lead to even bigger events in Hartlepool’s future.

Commodore Baum explained: “The real reason for doing this was to deliver the Admiral’s flag as all my colleagues from different regions are coming for a management meeting in March.

“Protocol says that the Admiral’s flag needs to be flying when they come.”

He said the meeting was likely to include “brainstorming” about possible future events for Trincomalee including the possibility of a Navy ship paying a visit later in the year.

“I have got my team working on it and we will get a ship at some point,” said Commodore Baum who is the Naval Regional Commander for the North of England and Isle of Man, responsible for organising naval activities in the area.

HMS Trincomalee Trust general manager David McKnight said the visit of the Royal Navy officials and the possibility of a ship’s visit in the future was “fabulous news.

“It is great to have the support of the Royal Navy and it is very re-assuring to know that we have it.”
