Addict mum avoids prison
A HEROIN addict mum has narrowly avoided jail after supplying the drug to her husband.
Mum-of-five Hayley Rasul appeared before a judge yesterday to be sentenced alongside her husband Naeem.
The couple were arrested after police raided Naeem's house and discovered about 500 of the Class A drug hidden under lead flashing on the roof.
Hayley, 32, admitted buying the heroin and giving it to her husband for them both to use.
The couple were arrested just months after appearing on the front page of the Mail when Naeem Rasul helped deliver their daughter after his wife went into labour a week early.
Drugs squad police executed the search warrant at the property in Sheriff Street, Hartlepool, on September 11 last year.
Hayley was living at a different house after a row with her husband.
Joseph Spencer, prosecuting at Teesside Crown Court, said police found three bags of heroin that were divided into 23 small packages weighing a total of 11.62 grams and had a street value of up to 581.
Hayley was facing a possible prison sentence after she admitted buying the drugs and supplying them to her husband.
She also admitted perverting the course of justice by lying to police on December 12 last year, saying the heroin was in her possession when she knew her husband had it.
But she walked free after being given a nine-month prison sentence that was suspended for two years.
Jim Withyman, mitigating for her, said: "She is sorry for what she has done. She realises the damage drugs do to society and particular her and her family unit. At 32, she has come to the end of the road with
her drugs misuse and wants to stop that."
Naeem Rasul, 31, received an 18-month community order with supervision and five education, training and employment sessions after pleading guilty to possession of heroin.
Robin Denny, mitigating, said his client had taken drugs since his early teens and would need a lot of help to overcome his addiction.
The couple, of Mitchell Street, Hartlepool, were also told to undergo nine months of drug rehabilitation each.
Judge George Moorhouse said: "It seems you desperately need help. You have the added responsibility of five young children. I'm giving you a chance."
