Another milestone for battling Bella

A “STRONG-WILLED” great-great-grandmother celebrated a milestone birthday with a visit from a civic visitor.

Bella Lee enjoyed a visit from Peterlee Mayor, Councillor Bob Kyle, on her 101st birthday.

According to her family, the head of five generations, who lives at the Peterlee Care Home, has reached her grand old age as she is a “battler” and strong-willed.

Daughter Isabella Bostock, 72, explained: “About six years ago, she was in a home in Durham and fell out of bed and broke her hip.

“I got a phone call from the hospital to say her heart was weak, yet she has lived this long.

“She’s strong-willed.”

Bella (nee Gray) was born in Murton and worked in greenhouses ran by her father.

She moved to Haswell when she married Henry Lee, who was from South Hetton.

The couple went on to have six children, the late Henry, who passed away around 12 years ago and would have now been 78, Robert, who is now 76 and lives in Hartlepool, Shirley Thompson, 74, who lives in Murton, Isabella, who lives in Haswell, Irene Taylor, 68, from Haswell and Ruth Smith, 66, who lives in Peterlee.

She has around 17 grandchildren, as well as great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mother-of-six Isabella, who is married to John, said Bella “is getting well looked after” at the Peterlee Care Home, in Westcott Road, Peterlee, where she has lived for around three years.

Angela Rushton, the home’s activities co-ordinator, said: “We wish Bella a happy birthday.

“Many happy returns, with lots more, we hope.”
