Bid to cut down speeding
POLICE have launched a week-long campaign to crack down on speeding drivers.
Both Cleveland and Durham forces are taking part in an international operation from today that is co-ordinated by the European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL), which is supported by 27 countries across Europe.
Inspector Mick Little, of Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, said: “It is generally acknowledged that speed remains one of the key factors in serious or fatal injury collisions, involving motorists and or vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
“We have a duty of care to ensure we reduce the number of road casualties across both force areas.
“We always seek to work with drivers across Durham and Cleveland, and that is why we are giving advance notice of the operation. However, motorists need to acknowledge they have a duty of care to all other road users.
“Those who choose to ignore the speed limits can expect to be prosecuted for their actions.”
TISPOL hopes the wide-scale initiative will reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured across the continent’s roads.
The organisation’s president, Pasi Kemppainen, said: “The faster you drive, the higher your risk of being responsible for a collision, in which innocent road users might lose their lives or sustain permanent disability.
“Wise drivers of any age choose their speeds with care and with consideration to others. Those who choose otherwise can expect to receive penalties.
“Police officers enforce the law because they know that lives will be saved.”
