Boxer to be ambassador

A TOWN boxer has joined an Olympic gold medallist to help get children hooked on sport.

Hartlepool fighter Amanda Coulson is teaming up with former sprinter Darren Campbell to become an athlete mentor on behalf of Sky Sports Living for Sport.

The Great British women’s boxing champion will visit secondary schools across the North-East to inspire and motivate pupils as part of the initiative in the run-up to the London Olympics in July.

Amanda, 29, said: “Sport is such a powerful tool to use for improving life skills. From my own personal experiences I know exactly how sport can truly help a person strive to get the best out of life.

“To have the opportunity to share my own story with young people is a real privilege. I’m very excited about the year ahead and meeting more inspirational students across the North-East.”

Now in its ninth year, Sky Sports Living for Sport is a free initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust. There are 36 athlete mentors telling their stories of success across the country.

Amanda’s includes her struggle to fit into the boxing world as a woman, but soon becoming a town favourite when she joined Hartlepool Catholic Boxing Club and won bout after bout.

She first represented England in 2004 and is currently part of the GB squad which trains at the English Institute of Sport, in Sheffield, and her dream is to represent her country at London 2012.
