A COUNCILLOR is asking residents to support plans for traffic-calming measures to be installed on a road he says is being used by speeding drivers.

Residents in Station Town are due to receive letters from Durham County Council’s highways department asking for their views on whether a chicane should be installed on the B1280 Station Road, the main road through the village.

Councillor Alan Cox, who represents Station Town as part of the Blackhall ward, claims drivers have been clocked at 60mph on the 30mph road and a two-year campaign has taken place to get the measures imposed.

He said: “Traffic flies up and down there.

“Over the years, it has been an area which is an accident waiting to happen - there have been a few near-misses.”

The chicane would be installed near Gill’s Fish Shop, up from the roundabout with the junction of Rodridge Park.

Letters will be sent in the next few days and the deadline to respond to the county council is March 9.

If approved, the scheme would be funded by Coun Cox, and fellow councillor Rob Crute from ward funds.
