Club is top of the chops after cash boost

SHOPPING centre bosses have kick-started the summer with a charity boost for a martial arts club.

The Koryo Taekwondo Club is the latest group to benefit from the Peterlee-based Castle Dene Shopping Centre’s Community Fund.

The community fund purse is opened every three months and gives groups in East Durham a chance to win £500 to spend on their organisation.

The successful applicant this time round was the Koryo club, which meets in The Pavilion at Helford Road, in Peterlee.

The club is open to both male and females from age six upwards and provides a safe environment for members to both learn and build confidence.

The £500 bursary will be used to purchase training equipment for members to use, as equipment is normally too expensive for members to buy themselves.

Sharon Pounder, Peterlee Town Council’s sports development officer, who applied on behalf of the club, is based at the pavilion.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted that Castle Dene Shopping Centre have awarded the club the £500.

“The members and parents will be so grateful.”

Centre manager Barry Parnell said: “The club and its members will benefit greatly from the £500 award.

“I urge other youngsters in the area to go along to one of their sessions and see what the club is doing for our local young people.”

Previous applicants who have been unsuccessful can re-apply for forthcoming rounds of funding when final details are revealed later this summer.
