A DAD who was badly burned in a fire at his home after trying to rescue his pet dogs is expected to be in a coma for some time, say police.

It has emerged that the 29-year-old man, named locally as Dean Day, suffered 20 to 30 per cent burns to his face and upper body following Friday’s incident.

Mr Day was rushed to Sunderland Royal Hospital following a blaze at his semi-detached home in Dunelm Walk, Peterlee.

He was transferred to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and was placed in an induced coma.

Mr Day’s 27-year-old partner, named locally as Hayley Evans, was also taken to hospital, believed to have been suffering the effects of smoke inhalation.
