Former Hartlepool Trading Standards Officer Michael Welsh on the half-acre plot of land donated to the community of Easington, which he plans to turn into a community garden with "the best view in East Durham."

A GREEN-FINGERED group that hopes to transform a former mining village is appealing for help from other gardeners.

The Easington Seed Pods group is asking past and present residents of Easington Colliery to contact them if they are considering dividing their perennial plants this spring.

The group, in conjunction with Easington Colliery in Bloom, is developing the Easington Community Garden (ECG) which they hope will become the heart of the community.

Easington Seed Pods organiser and former Hartlepool Borough Council trading standards officer, Michael Welsh, said: “The group aims to make Easington Colliery a better and more colourful place to live by planting perennial plants in the community, for all to enjoy.

“Perennials can be divided in the spring or autumn.

“We would like fellow gardeners to donate part of the divided plant material to our group so we can grow them on and for them to either be used as stock plants in the Community Garden or planted in communal areas for all to enjoy.

Last year the group collected cuttings from gardeners all over east Durham, to be replanted around Easington Colliery.

Mr Welsh, from the Wingate area, added: “We are going from strength to strength.

“But we still need plant material, volunteers and funding to allow the project to grow and flourish.”

He is asking for further donations of plants and for anyone interested in volunteering to call him on (01429) 836811 or email easingtonseedpods@gmail.com
