A MAN was airlifted to hospital after his car left a dual-carriageway and rolled down an embankment.

The 52-year-old was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, after veering off the A19 southbound carriageway near Shotton Hall, Peterlee.

The vehicle, which was the only one involved in the incident, rolled down an embankment and came to a stop in a grassed area.

The driver suffered head and leg injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

An air ambulance spokesman said: “The car had left the road and rolled several times down the embankment into a grassed area near the houses.

”Police, fire and paramedics were at the scene. The man was trapped in the vehicle after the crash. He was released from the vehicle and treated by the paramedics and an air ambulance doctor for his injuries, before being to taken James Cook University Hospital in a stable condition.”

One lane had to be closed briefly after the incident at around 3.15pm on Sunday.

Any witnesses are asked to call PC Fisher, of Durham Police, on the non-emergency 101 number.
