A VILLAGE war memorial has been given a fitting makeover after a kind business came to a church’s aid.

The plinth carrying the names of Greatham’s war dead was smartened up after church wardens noticed a number of letters had dropped off and was starting to look a bit shabby.

Generous funeral directors Mason & Gerald Martin came to their aid by offering to foot the £250 bill for the much needed repairs.

The memorial in the grounds of St John the Baptist Church in the village is now looking good as new after the work was carried out.

Church warden Jim Croll said: “We noticed during the Remembrance service that the lettering was rather shabby and some had fallen off the memorial.

“We looked round and got varied estimates and were talking about how much it was going to cost when Gerald Martin heard and immediately stepped in.

“He said ‘get it repaired and we will donate the money’.

“Now it is absolutely crisp and clear. The inscriptions are very easy to read.

“We are very grateful to Mason & Gerald Martin.

“Being a village most of those families of those on the memorial are still present in Greatham, so you can’t afford to let that sort of thing lapse.

“It’s a matter of village pride.”

The memorial is inscribed with the names of all the men from the village who lost their lives in the First and Second world wars.

Gerald Martin, of Mason & Gerald Martin funeral service in Hartlepool, said he was happy to help.

He said: “I always say I’m happy to put back into the community what the community give me as a business.

“Like we say at Remembrance time, we will remember those that have fought for crown and country.”
