Food festival cancelled

A FOOD festival that was set to tickle the tastebuds has been cancelled due to the bad weather.

Delicious North East has been called off after heavy rainfall meant the necessary safety measures could not be met.

The debut festival, organised by the our parent company Northeast Press, was expected to attract thousands of visitors from across the region and feature displays from by a host of top chefs and food experts.

The downpours caused the ground at Nissan’s plant in Sunderland to become water-logged meaning the plug had to be pulled on the two-day event.

Northeast Press editorial director Rob Lawson, who helped organise the festival, said: “I’m desperately saddened and frustrated that Delicious won’t be going ahead. It was going to be a fabulous weekend, full of food and fun.

“The organisers and our friends at Nissan could not have done anything more to try to overcome the elements, but in the end the weather got the better of us.

“It was going to be a special weekend for anyone attending the event, thanks to the months of work put in by our organisers.”

Mr Lawson added: “We were trying to put the infrastructure in place to ensure everything would be ok health and safety wise, but the waterlogged grounds prevented us getting the necessary measures in place.

“We couldn’t get the marquees up and we couldn’t get the power sources we needed in place.

“I’d like to thank all of our generous sponsors for their support, and all the stall-holders for their understanding.

“They’ve all been contacted to explain the situation and they’ve been great.

“I’d also like to apologise to readers, who I’m sure, like me, were looking forward to what would have been a fantastic event.

“We’re now looking to get a date in the diary for next year.”

A Camra real ale and cider festival was also planned for the weekend, with live music served up as a side order.

All festival-goers who have bought a ticket will be re-funded.

The Great Yorkshire Show and Harrogate show has also been scrapped because of the wet weather.
