Football match in memory of Joe

THE heartbroken son of a dad who died of a heart attack aged just 40 is organising a football match in his memory.

Liam McGinty, 18, is arranging a football game in memory of his father, Joe, who died in Novemberlast year.

The Mail reported at the time that the sudden death of Joe, who was well-known throughout Hartlepool and east Durham football circles, stunned his family and friends as he was so fit and healthy.

Joe, who worked at Peterlee's NSK Bearings for 20 years, had survived a heart attack not long after returning from a family holiday in September last year and was given medication.

But a viral infection brought on a second attack and he died on November 27, leaving behind his devastated wife, Tracey, 42, son Liam, and 14-year-old daughter Aimee.

As the first anniversary of Joe's death looms, his family have planned a charity football match tomorrow and fundraising night next month to raise money for CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Joe managed East Durham College's boys team, which Liam played for, and tomorrow Liam and college players will take on a side of Joe's footballing friends at the Helford Road pavilion in Peterlee.

Tracey, who lives in the Edenhill area of Peterlee and is manager of the town's PDSA shop, said: "We want to keep Joe's memory going, with him being so popular.

"The match was Liam's idea, he's wanted to do it for ages and hopefully it will become an annual thing."

The match kicks off at 2.30pm and will be followed by a gathering at the Black Bull pub, in Old Shotton.

A further fundraising event including a disco, raffle and auction will take place at Peterlee Leisure Centre on November 28.

Tickets are 3 and can be obtained by ringing Tracey on (0191) 5184065, Colin Boxall on (07988) 873289 or from the leisure centre.
