The family of the Horden gun massacre victims has been plunged into further turmoil after a brother of one of those shot dead slipped into a coma.

Bryan Hardman, brother of Susan McGoldrick, 47, and Alison Turnbull, 44, and uncle of Alison’s 24-year-old daughter Tanya Turnbull, who were killed by gunman Michael Atherton in Horden on New Year’s Day, is in a coma in a London hospital. Mr Hardman, who lives in Horden, suffered serious injuries after he fell down a flight of fire escape stairs in Essex, where he had been working as a pipe fitter.

His nephew, Bobby Turnbull, son of Alison Turnbull, who has been campaigning for tighter gun laws following the tragedy, said: “It’s just been one thing after another and I don’t know how any of us have been coping, we have just been finding the strength from somewhere to deal with all that’s happened.”

Bobby, a golf club groundsman from Blackhall, said his uncle’s partner, Susan Bailey, and eldest son Dale rushed to the capital to be by his side.
