Grease mania!

Waiting for Video...

A FLASH of Grease Lightning made its way to town as talented youngsters helped to count down to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Performers from the Urban Kaos dance group showed off their moves and made their way around Hartlepool to the sound of the 70s hit-film Grease.

The impressive dancers turned the car park of Hartlepool’s Historic Quay into Greasemania as they performed their dance rendition of Grease Lightning and then made their way to Hartlepool College of Further Education for their version of Beauty School Drop Out.

The colourful display of dance marked the countdown to the Diamond Festival, a range of events taking place in town later this year to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

People can enjoy a fun-packed extravaganza of action when the festival runs from Friday, June 1, to Tuesday, June 5.

It will feature tributes to children’s television shows of the past, fashion shows, a film festival and a lookback to the punk mayhem music scene of the 70s.

And teenagers will also be able to slip back into their prom dresses and suits for a one-night only Greasemania special.

Urban Kaos company directors, Kelly Ensbury and Amy Walton, have been working closely with dance schools, colleges and retirement villages throughout Hartlepool in an attempt to raise awareness of the events.

Youngsters at the group, based in Stockton, will join talented performers from around Hartlepool in performing at the festival.

Kelly said: “The Diamond Festival will be an excellent fun-packed few days and we are delighted to be part of it.

“The youngsters have had loads of fun making the Grease videos and it looks excellent.

“The Diamond Festival will take place at various locations around Hartlepool including the Maritime Experience, the Town Hall Theatre and Headland’s Borough Hall.

Claire Munroe, marketing officer for Hartlepool Borough Council’s cultural services, said: “There is going to be absolutely loads going on, it promises to be a fantastic few days.

“People can step back in time and enjoy all sorts of entertainment from years gone by.

“I think it will prove a real success.”

Tickets for the events will be on sale soon with details to be announced in the Hartlepool Mail.

Organisers say some of the events will have small admission charges.
