Grenade detonated off the A19

BOMB disposal experts were called to the A19 where they carried out a controlled explosion of an old hand grenade.

A metal detector enthusiast who was out exploring land adjacent to the A19 between Billingham and Portrack, in Stockton, came across the device and contacted the police around 2.30pm yesterday.

One lane of the A19 southbound was closed while an Army bomb disposal team drafted in from Catterick Garrison detonated the device around 4.15pm.
