Jeff backs fitness campaign
PASSIONATE television presenter Jeff Stelling is urging people to get behind a campaign to get people fit in Olympic year.
The Hartlepool-born sports enthusiast is the latest big name to back the Hartlepool Mail’s Race for Fitness project.
Jeff who has been back “home” this week, spoke to the Mail about the wonders of sport and fitness in building confidence.
And with just months to go before the greatest sporting spectacle on the planet graces the UK, when better than now to make an effort to stay fit?
“I have never been a great sportsman,” said Jeff.
“But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy playing sport and keeping fit.
“Everyone doesn’t perform at an elite standard but sport is still just as enjoyable.
“My two young sons love playing football. They might never make it at a professional standard but that doesn’t change anything.
“Playing sport and keeping fit can give people so much confidence and self belief.”
Jeff joins Lord Sebastian Coe, former-Olympian Fatima Whitbread, Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond, and more than 30 other individuals and health awareness groups in supporting the Race for Fitness campaign.
Jeff, former host of Channel 4 programme Countdown and well-known for presenting Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports, has always made efforts to keep himself fit.
He has even managed to complete three marathons in the past.
Town residents don’t have to run marathons or take on other Herculean challenges to get involved with the Mail’s campaign.
You may just be going out walking, cycling or swimming a couple of times a week in order to improve your general health.
Even if your challenge for 2012 is giving up smoking or drinking less alcohol, let us know.
