AN MP is backing the family of a two-year-old girl who vanished in Germany 30 years ago in their bid for an independent inquiry into her disappearance.

Hartlepool man Richie Lee is calling for an independent investigation into the disappearance of his daughter, Katrice Lee, from a supermarket in Paderborn, Germany, on November 28, 1981.

The move comes as the German Police say they are closing the case due to the amount of time lapsed, says Mr Lee.

Mr Lee, 62, who has been promised a re-investigation of the case by the Royal Military Police (RMP) with 18 full-time members of staff working on it, said: “Unfortunately we’ve been informed that the German Police have closed the case. And if they found someone in Germany they couldn’t take them to court because of the time that’s passed.

“How can the Royal Military Police go to a foreign country to reinitiate an investigation if they haven’t got the support of the police in that country?

“We’re no further forward than we were 30 years ago. I would like to see an independent inquiry because otherwise are we going to be in the same situation in 10 years time?”

Mr Wright said: “I was told there are 18 members of staff working on this case. However, you’d think that the family would be getting much more information on a regular basis if that’s true.

“They want the answers they’ve been denied all these years, and I am in full support of an independent inquiry.”
