POLICE have hailed the success of a football tournament that aims to stamp out anti-social behaviour among young people.

SAFC Helford won the first annual East Durham Football Tournament, which was organised by Peterlee Police and other agencies in a bid to tackle yobbish behaviour.

SAFC Helford beat Helford Reds 2-1 during the event at Helford Road Pavilion, in Peterlee, which saw action from 11 five-a-side teams of 14 to 16-year-olds representing Peterlee and the surrounding villages.

The idea for the event came after police and other agencies discussed ways of tackling anti-social behaviour, mainly in the Shotton Colliery and Wheatley Hill areas.

Young people were invited to sign anti-social behaviour agreements and directed towards positive activities in their villages.

Sergeant Steve Hawkes, of Peterlee Police, said: “It was an excellent event and we hope to revisit it in the future.

“Since we started planning the event there has been a massive reduction in anti-social behaviour.

“It has broken down barriers between police, other agencies and local youth.

“They need to be congratulated for their behaviour and efforts on the day and in the lead-up to the tournament.”

PCSO Rob Ramshaw and Durham County Council neighbourhood warden Fay Daglish were heavily involved in organising the day and other agencies involved include Sunderland AFC Foundation, Caterpillar, East Durham Homes, Peterlee Town Council, Durham County Council, One Point Service, Northumbrian Water and Safe Durham Partnership.
