Last laugh for Debbie

A TEACHING assistant will have the last laugh today after her beloved Sunderland were victorious in the North East cup derby last night.

As reported in yesterday’s Mail, the banter at West View Primary School has been at fever pitch between Black Cats fan Debbie Hunt and her Boro rival Lucy Thatcher.

The two had enjoyed a light-hearted war of words ahead of the first game, which finished 1-1, and that continued right up to last night’s replay at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium.

But it was Debbie who walked into work this morning with a smile on her face after an extra-time winner from Stephane Sessegnon booked Premier League Sunderland a spot in the last 16.

Debbie and Lucy, a Year 1 teacher, were confident of their team coming out on top in last night’s game and both watched the match live on television.

Debbie, a reception class teaching assistant at the school, in Davison Drive, Hartlepool, said: “I was confident before the game that we would win, we have been playing very well in the league.

“It was another really close match but I’m over the moon we managed to win it late on.”
