Man in coma after attack

A MAN is in an induced coma after suffering serious head injuries in an attack.

The 30-year-old is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after the incident, which happened in Blackhall during the early hours of Tuesday.

Police were called to Second Street shortly after 12.30am following reports of a disturbance.

When officers arrived they found the victim lying on the floor inside his house, unconscious and bleeding from his mouth.

He was taken by ambulance to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, where he was found to have serious head injuries.

He has been heavily sedated since his admission and remains in a critical but stable condition.

Two men aged 30 and 32 who live in the area were arrested later on Tuesday morning on suspicion of assault.

After being questioned they were released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police say further arrests are likely.

The officer leading the investigation, Det Chf Insp Brad Howe, said police were speaking to witnesses to establish exactly what had happened.

He said: “Officers were in the area for most of Tuesday carrying out inquiries and providing reassurance to local residents.

“We had a number of calls on the night from people reporting the incident and I would urge anyone who has not already spoken to us to come forward.”
