Man’s ear ‘bitten off’ in attack

A MAN has been left disfigured after his ear was bitten almost clean off in an attack.

The victim, 24, will need surgery after his ear was severed in a confrontation with another man.

Police and paramedics were called to the injured man after the incident at a house in Cumbria Way, Peterlee, at 6am on Saturday.

The victim is in the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.

It is not known if doctors will be able to save his ear.

Detective Constable Martin Wilson, of Peterlee CID, said: “People were drinking with each other and socialising when there was a disturbance and during that an altercation whereby one man has his ear severed.

“It was an horrific injury. The man is still in hospital.

“He’s going to require surgery and it is going to be a number of months before he recovers.

“He is going to be left with a permanent disfigurement.”

A 27-year-old local man is due at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court today after being charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.

Three other men also arrested on suspicion of GBH have been bailed by police.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact DC Wilson on (0191) 3752611 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
