Man swung at policeman after getting drunk

A 40-YEAR-OLD man who was plied with shots on a works night out ended up staggering into a policeman and swinging a punch at the officer – which missed.

Workman Jason Bernard O’Mara had been out drinking with his colleagues and “couldn’t remember a thing” after about 7pm, Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court was told.

But around 10.45pm, as a police officer was dealing with another matter in Victoria Road, O’Mara came stumbling along.

He fell into the policeman, started mumbling and then tried to hit the officer but missed.

Justices heard the defendant was arrested and put into the back of a police van, in which he banged his head against the interior cages all the way to the police station.

O’Mara, of Intrepid Close, Seaton Carew, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly on January 21.

Prosecuting, Lynne Dalton said: “It was around 10.45pm when officers were flagged down by a member of the public on Victoria Road saying that two men were running repeatedly into the street causing an obstruction to oncoming vehicles.

“The defendant staggered towards an officer and fell on to him. The defendant then began to mumble incoherently and it was quite clear he was heavily intoxicated.

“He then attempted to punch the officer but missed, and was put onto the floor and arrested.

“He then repeatedly banged his head on the cage of the van as he was being transported to Hartlepool Police Station.”

O’Mara represented himself in court and told magistrates that he was “embarrassed” at what had happened.

“I’m really sorry,” he said. “The lads were on a works do and all the young lads started giving these shots out and I don’t remember anything after about 7pm.

“I’m embarrassed, it’s not something I do, I’m 40-years-old now. I’ve worked all my life and I’ll say I’m sorry again.”

Chairman of the bench William Grainger fined O’Mara £80, ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
