Milestone for school project
PLANS to modernise a secondary school have reached a major milestone.
Contracts for the project at Wellfield College of Maths and Computing, in Wingate, have been signed, which means work can now go ahead to create new and upgraded facilities at the school.
Along with the construction of a two-storey extension, improvements will be made to the existing building.
This will include the creation of a better facade and entrance to the school, as well as a better layout within the school to improve use of the space.
Coun Claire Vasey, cabinet member for children and young people’s services at Durham County Council, said: “I’m very pleased that this important project has reached this milestone.
“The improvements to the building and facilities will not only bring enormous benefits for the students, but will also help to create a new identity for the school at the heart of the local community.
“This is a very exciting time for everyone at the school.”
The school, which will have spaces for up to 910 pupils aged 11 to 16, will use ICT to develop new opportunities for pupils and their families to have access to teaching and learning materials from home.
Work is expected to start before the summer.
