TWO MPs will swap the House of Commons for the outdoors by joining a sponsored walk in aid of the Hartlepool & District Hospice.

Hartlepool MP Iain Wright and his Easington counterpart Grahame Morris have signed up for the charity event.

The three-mile walk is being organised by the Peterlee and District Lions Club in support of the Wells Avenue hospice.

Walkers will follow a route between The Pavilion, in Peterlee, and Castle Eden Dene.

Tommy Miller, walk organiser and member of the Lions Club, said: “I’m delighted that both MPs for the area are doing the walk for us.

“It will give us a good boost and I hope we get as many people as possible to sponsor us and support the hospice.”

The event takes place at 10.30am on Sunday May 20, from The Pavilion, in the town’s Helford Road.

Mr Wright said: “I just think Hartlepool hospice does so much good work in the town.

“It is recognised as one of the key assets of Hartlepool in terms of caring for people towards the end of their lives.

“I am happy to provide as much support as possible to the Lions and back up what they are doing by going on the walk with them.”

The walk is open to anyone aged 12 and over, but children between twelve and 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Former Coronation Street actor Bruce Jones, who played lovable layabout Les Battersby, is also backing the walk and linked up with the Peterlee Lions to promote the event.

Mark Venus, assistant manager of Middlesbrough football club, Sunderland star Titus Bramble, and John Carver assistant manager Newcastle United, have all donated signed team shirts for a raffle to on the day.

Stewards will be provided by Horden boxing club Boxing Clever and is once supported by Peterlee Town Council, Natural England and Peterlee Walking Club.

Sponsor forms are available from the hospice, The Pavilion or by calling 0790189681.
