Photographers snap up awards

THESE young people were all smiles when they were announced as top talent in a competition to find budding photographers.
The winners and runners-up in The Rotary Club of Hartlepool’s Young Photographer Olympics-themed competition have been named.
In the aged seven-10 category of the Hartlepool Mail-backed competition, eight-year-old Joshua Bedding, of St Peter’s Elwick Primary School, was judged the winner.
He used the Olympic motto “faster, higher, stronger” as the basis for his four-piece collection featuring pictures of moving cars, a wind turbine, a JCB and a light above Seal Sands representing the Olympic flame.
Event co-ordinator Barbra Midgley, who is Hartlepool Rotary’s New Generations officer, said: “I thought Joshua interpreted the theme on a totally different level to what older people might and the techniques used were very advanced for someone his age.”
Runner-up in the category was fellow St Peter’s School pupil, Elliott Dawson, eight, who submitted pictures of his sister taking part in sport.
He has broken his arm and cannot participate in sport at the moment, but drew on his sister for inspiration.
In the aged 14-18 section, the winner was Lauren Marsden, a 17-year-old English Martyrs Sixth Form College student.
Mrs Midgley said Lauren’s pictures, featuring Hartlepool Olympic boxing hopeful Savannah Marshall, “were of a very high technical standard”.
Hartlepool Sixth Form College student Emily Lloyd, 17, who was last year’s winner, was runner-up with her Olympian and Paralympian-inspired photographs.
The winners will now represent the area at district level in Sedgefield on February 15, with hopes of getting through to the national final.
The winners each received £50 and a personalised shield, with the runners-up picking up a £25 prize.
As part of the prize, Lauren will also get to shadow a Mail photographer.
The competition was judged by the Mail’s chief photographer Tom Collins and retired art teacher George Colley.
