MEDICS are delighted to have finally submitted plans to build a long-awaited multi-million-pound health centre designed to revolutionise health care for three villages.
Dr N Mahto and Partners, who have practices in Wheatley Hill and Thornley, as well and Kelloe, have announced that their proposals to build a 10,290sq ft medical centre, costing £2m, in Wheatley Hill have been lodged with Durham County Council.
There had been a delay in submitting the plans, which have been in the pipeline in some form or another for 15 years, as residents had raised concerns, including about increased visitors and traffic to the area around the planned location, in Thornley Road.
But developers have been busy addressing these issues and plans are now in with the local authority.
County council planners will be considering the application, which has been prepared by architects Howarth Litchfield Partnership.
The new development would be a one stop health shop comprising a GP’s surgery, a dentist’s, a pharmacy and other associated services.
There would also be an associated car park, specialist clinics for minor surgery, leg ulcers and diabetes, treatment rooms, a retail unit and a base for NHS County Durham and Darlington, as well as consultation areas and offices.
Local councillors are excited to see that the project is finally progressing having tried to get some form of development moving for around 15 years.
Councillor Morris Nichols, who represents Thornley on the county council, said: “This is something I have been fighting for for some time.”
If it wins approval, the state-of-the-art building will be built on a site to the rear of the existing surgery.
It is hoped that the development could be completed in 2013-14.
