Police car damaged during crash investigation

A POLICE car was damaged in a road accident as officers dealt with a crash that had happened just moments earlier.

Police were called to Hartlepool's Brenda Road yesterday after a collision between a red Vauxhall Astra, driven by a man in his early 40s, and a Mercedes, driven by a woman in her mid-30s.

Officers were called just after 5.30pm and shortly after they pulled up at the scene to deal with the incident, a silver Vauxhall Vectra driven by a man in his early 70s hit the stationary police car.

Inspector Wayne Marram, of Hartlepool Police, said that although an ambulance was called no-one was injured.

He said that the first collision, which happened just past the Teesbay retail park roundabout, caused minor damage to the two cars that were both heading in the same direction towards Seaton Carew.

"There was a bit of damage to the back of the police car and damage to the front of the Vectra," he added.

The road was closed for an hour and three quarters and re-opened at 7.20pm.
