Praise from police after blitz on yobs
POLICE have praised a community for helping to slash anti-social by almost half.
The number of yobbish crimes in East Durham has plummeted by a staggering 46 per cent, with 761 recorded incidents between April 1 and June 30 compared to 1,395 in the same period last year.
And overall crime in the Peterlee neighbourhood policing area is down by 20 per cent, from 953 incidents to 761, while 39 per cent of the perpretators of those crimes have been brought to justice.
Inspector Dave Coxon, of Peterlee Police, said Horden has had the most notable decrease in anti-social behaviour, with 200 fewer incidents, from 330 to 130.
He added that residents have a major part to play in cutting crime and praised a recent recruitment drive to get more people to sign up to Neighbourhood Watch.
Last month Durham Police ran a campaign to get 1,000 people to sign up to the scheme in just a week.
Police chiefs today revealed that 1,353 new households joined Neighbourhood Watch and 77 new schemes were started up.
Insp Coxon added: “Compared to this time last year there’s been a massive drop.
“That’s because the community are getting behind reporting incidents and giving us the evidence to deal with people. We are tackling people early on in the anti-social cycle, we are not letting them continue to cause misery for residents.”
