Re-designing our Horden

A COMMUNITY has launched a bid to raise £500,000 to change the face of the village and be the first step in the regeneration of Horden.

These are the words of Accent Foundation Community Organiser, Michael Fishwick, who has “big plans” for the community.

The regeneration of St Mary’s Church Hall is at the final stage of application to the Lottery Fund where they are looking for £500,000 to make it a place to be proud of.

If successful, it will lead to a new management system to run the regenerated church hall.

After nearly a year of hard work to make this dream happen, Michael, 33, believes it could change the whole picture of Horden.

He added: “Hopefully this will make people even more proud to say they are from Horden.

“The church hall is just the first step to a brighter future and along with the redevelopment of bungalows and houses in the community, we should see a fantastic change in Horden.

“At the minute the hall is leaking from the roof and the heating system is not the greatest so we have decided to redevelop the whole of the place.

“Hopefully it will attract more people to come into the centre and the people who already use it can be even more happy.

“The people of Horden deserve something like this and it can only mean a brighter future for the development of the village.”

After 99 years standing proud on Stapylton Drive, Horden, Michael hopes that a brand new generation can enjoy the facilities for another century.

To commemorate the landmark anniversary next year, a Royal visit to Horden is expected.

“We really hope we can show the Royals a near finished church hall,” added Seaham resident Michael.

“The 100th anniversary is going to be fantastic and I would love it if we could show them a landmark the people are proud of.

“There will be big celebrations so we get everything in order for a new centre.”
