Sainsbury’s named for new store

SAINSBURY’S has been announced as the company that will take up a new 30,000sq ft store.

Developers Terrace Hill has signed up the chain as operator for the new supermaket, at Salters Lane, in Sedgefield, which will create around 250 jobs.

The plans, unanimously approved by Durham County Council’s county planning committee in December, include a petrol station, improved pedestrian and cycle access along Salters Lane and substantial landscaping work.

The developers received support from local residents following consultation from Stockton-based Terrace Hill, which previously told the Hartlepool Mail that research had shown people from Sedgefield were travelling as far as Darlington to do their grocery shopping.

Terrace Hill head of retail Duncan McEwan said: “We have worked hard to propose a food store that meets the needs of the community and I am confident that Sainsbury’s will be a great neighbour for Sedgefield and the surrounding villages.

“Sainsbury’s has an exemplary track record for recruiting locally.”

Sainsbury’s regional development executive Paul Miller said: “We are delighted to confirm plans to open a new supermarket in Sedgefield.”

The Sainsbury’s store could be open by early 2013 and recruitment for job roles would begin before then.

Sainsbury’s will look to recruit colleagues who live close to the Sedgefield store and positions will be advertised on the Sainsbury’s website and through partnership with the local Jobcentre Plus.
