A couple were handed the keys to their new wheelchair accessible car by EastEnders actor David Proud after winning a competition.
Matthew Iceton and his wife Catharine, who has multiple sclerosis, were crowned winners of Constables Mobility’s Win-a-Car giveaway after Matthew entered the competition last year.
The new Peugeot Tepee 1.6L, worth £15,000, has changed the way the Peterlee couple get around after they were given the vehicle by Constables Mobility, which is a manufacturer and supplier of wheelchair accessible cars with more than 30 years of expert engineering.
Matthew, 39, was one of almost 3,000 competition entrants and was thrilled when told the news he had won.
He said: “I’d completely forgotten I’d entered the competition and hadn’t even told my wife about it. We were in shock for days, it’s such a fantastic prize.”
Before entering the competition Matthew said he had been looking for a wheelchair accessible car for a few months as his wife is a wheelchair user and is dependent on taxis.
He added: “I had to come to the conclusion we couldn’t afford to buy one for a number of years. Winning the converted Peugeot Partner Tepee is going to make a difference to our lives.”
For Catharine’s accessibility and comfort, the vehicle offers a gently sloping lightweight safety edged ramp with anti-slip surface, fully lowered floor to allow for more headroom, all round visibility, and a simple four-point wheelchair securing system.
David Proud, a wheelchair user himself, said: “I am delighted to be the person who gets to hand the keys of this lovely new car to Matthew and Catharine.
“Being mobile is so important as a disabled person and I hope this car leads to lots of new adventures for them.
“Constables Mobility has helped thousands of people in the UK become mobile over the last 30 years, and I wish them every success for the future.”
