Taking to the airwaves to help lifeboat crews

AMATEUR radio enthusiasts broadcast from Hartlepool Lifeboat Station as part of the service’s biggest annual fundraising drive.

Peterlee Radio Club broadcast from Hartlepool on Saturday and yesterday as they took part in SOS Radio Week.

The event, which runs all over the country from Saturday, January 21, to Sunday, January 29, is raising money for RNLI SOS Day.

SOS Week sees broadcasts taking place from about 40 RNLI lifeboat stations, including Hartlepool, when people call in to pledge money.

Owen Smith, secretary of Peterlee Radio Club, said: “We can speak with anyone around the world depending on atmospheric conditions and the frequency used.

“This is the first time we’ve broadcast from Hartlepool Lifeboat Station and we’re really looking forward to it and raising some money to help the volunteer lifeboat crews.”

Mike Craddy, Hartlepool lifeboat operations manager, said: “The SOS Radio Week forms part of the annual RNLI SOS Day fundraising and this year the money raised will go towards new state of the art life jackets for our volunteer lifeboat crews at all of the north’s lifeboat stations.

“We are very grateful to the amateur radio enthusiasts for supporting our charity in this way and wish them the best of luck for the event.”

RNLI SOS Day takes place on Friday and for more information or ideas on how to support your volunteer lifeboat crew this SOS Day, visit www.rnli.org.uk/sosday
