Talks on future of Vic

CIVIC chiefs are to meet once again behind-closed-doors to discuss ongoing proposals about the future of Hartlepool United's Victoria Park ground.

The League One club want to buy the Clarence Road ground, which they lease from Hartlepool Borough Council for around 18,000 a year on a long-term deal.

Both parties are remaining tight-lipped on the proposals to sell the ground, after years of negotiations, and further discussions will take place this week.

The Hartlepool United executive committee, which includes councillors Peter Jackson, Robbie Payne, Hilary Thompson and Pamela Hargreaves, was created to look at the issue.

An initial offer from the club to the council four years ago – which the Mail understands was around 300,000 – was rejected by the council.

The deal broke down after concerns about access and rights of way on a piece of land to the north of the ground and because the council was unsure about the long-term plans for the Mill House Leisure Centre.

But after the executive committee was set up in 2008, talks eventually resumed.

The land in question includes the area to the north of the ground, which covers the Mill House Leisure Centre, Indoor Bowls Club and the Mill House pub.

Councillor Robbie Payne, chairman of the Hartlepool United executive committee, has previously said the council has a duty to get best value for the town's taxpayers.

The council has commissioned a feasibility study of the re-development options for the whole Mill House site, which is being carried out by commercial agents DTZ.

Plans for the land, which would have the football club at the heart of it, could include a hotel, leisure centre, shops and housing.

The meeting is due to take place on Thursday at the Civic Centre, in Victoria Road, at 4pm.
