A TALL ship set sail from Hartlepool as it headed for its home port of Portsmouth.
The Stavros S Niarchos, which is taking part in this year’s Tall Ships Races, left the shores of the town yesterday.
It is taking part in the third race of this year’s event which was hosted by Hartlepool two years ago.
The Stavros S Niarchos, currently in the North Sea, was commissioned and built by the Sail Training Association in 2000 as one of two new brigs to replace the schooners Malcolm Miller and Sir Winston Churchill, which have taken young people on sail training voyages for over thirty years.
It will take part in the third leg of the races from Coruna in Spain to Dublin in Italy.
Stavros S Niarchos, built in Appledore, Devon, is at 59m the maximum size for a brig, the smallest of the square rigs, and will accommodate more young people than the schooners.
It is named after a Greek businessman and sailor who died in 1996.
The 18 sail ship has a crew of 89 aged from 14 to 80 years old.
It carries enough fuel to drive a small car around the world ten times and has 50 times more computer power than the Apollo 10 space craft.
