Torch procession for Tall Ships run-up

A TORCH procession is to take place to mark the run-up to the Tall Ships Races.

A flaming baton will be passed through the five council areas that are backing the races, symbolising a united front from them all.

Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Darlington and Stockton councils are all involved in the event.

The flame will be passed through each of the local authority areas before a beacon is lit at Seaton Carew on Wednesday, August 4.

All of the councils will also have a presence within the Tall Ships Village to promote their areas to visitors from far and wide.

Hartlepool Borough Council's chief executive Paul Walker said: "The tall ships event is not only massive for Hartlepool, it is also going to have a positive impact on the Tees Valley area and the whole of the North-East.

"We are delighted that all five Tees Valley authorities are on board with the event since it is a great opportunity to showcase what the area has to offer."

Hartlepool is expecting up to one million visitors between August 7 to 10, when around 70 Tall Ships sail into town from Kristiansand in Norway on the second and final leg of the races.

Further information about the event can be obtained by emailing tallships@hartlepool.gov.uk
