Tycoon speaks out over Moat rampage

AN ENTREPRENEUR says the public should have more respect for the emergency services – on the second anniversary of a gunman’s murderous rampage in which a policeman was shot and blinded.

And Wynyard tycoon Duncan Bannatyne, a patron of the Blue Lamp Foundation set up by blinded police officer David Rathband, branded gunman Raoul Moat a “coward”.

The 63-year-old Dragon’s Den star said: “What we can learn from the Raoul Moat incident is to have more respect for our emergency services and the risks they run for us.

“I got involved with the Blue Lamp Foundation after David Rathband was shot by that coward Raoul Moat.

“I befriended David over Twitter, and when we met he told me about the charity he wanted to set up.

“I wanted to assist him with it so I became a patron of the charity.”

The Scot made the comments at Walker Technology College, in Newcastle, at the weekend, where he played blind-folded football with members of the Team GB Paralympian squad.

Moat shot and killed himself after shooting his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart, 22, killing her new boyfriend Chris Brown, 29, and shooting and blinding traffic officer David in July 2010.

Dad-of-two PC Rathband was found hanging in his home in February this year.
