‘Unique’ ship sails into marina
The Spider T in Hartlepool Marina
A VESSEL which was brought back to life after years of being a wreck and is now the only surviving ship of its kind sailed into Hartlepool yesterday.
Spider T, which is the only Humber super sloop left in the world, stopped off overnight in Hartlepool Marina as part of a month-long adventure on the waters.
The impressive vessel recently finished as runner up in National Historic Ships Flagship of the Year Awards and received funding for a trip from the River Trent up to Scotland for the Arbroath Seafest, which takes place later this month.
Owner Mal Nicholson, 55, welcomed people from the town on to the ship yesterday to show them around.
Mal, a dad-of-two who lives just outside of Scunthorpe with wife Val, 52, said: “I bought the ship 15 years ago before it was cut up into small pieces.
“It was a mammoth task to recover it but it’s fantastic to be able to take it around the ports.
“We have had a crew of locals on board and they have been very impressed.”
After an overnight stay in the town, Mal got back behind the wheel early this morning for the journey up to Blyth.
