Toilet joy for gardeners
GARDENERS are feeling flush after Peterlee's new mayor unveiled a £24,000 toilet block.
The new toilet has come as a great relief to green-fingered growers at the Thorntree Gill allotment site who have previously been crossing their legs while they tend their plots.
But after a 20,000 grant from The Coalfields Regeneration Trust and a further 3,000 from the Sir James Knott Trust they now have somewhere to spend a penny.
Chairman of the Peterlee Leisure Gardens Association that runs the site, John Rippon, 65, said: "We were in need of a toilet block because the site was overlooked by houses on Thorntree Gill and another one was that we have women on site who come with families and it was a bit awkward."
The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is an independent grant-making organisation that was established in 1999 to better the quality of life in Britain's coalfield communities.
The Sir James Knott Trust offers donations to community events and issues.
The gardens, in Thorntree Gill, Peterlee, are managed on behalf of Peterlee Town Council by Peterlee Leisure Gardens Association.
