Easington miss out and Horden on form

Easington Cricket Club’s title chances suffered a huge blow last week as they were beaten by 26 runs when Murton visited the Welfare park.

The hosts had the chance to go top of the Durham Coast League with the weather-ruined season nearing its end but a brilliant bowling spell from Ryan Higgins was not backed up by the batsmen as they collapsed to 65 all out.

Higgins took four for 34 as Murton posted 91, including a David Hanson 20, and victory was in sight for the league challengers.

Unfortunately they could not take advantage as only professional Mark Cowell (20) and Brian Fenwick (13) could make it into double figures as R Bentley took six for 24 for the visitors.

Horden kept their Durham Senior League form going as they picked up yet another 20 points when they travelled to Marsden with M Mirza, yet again, the star of the show.

The Marsden batsmen were dismissed for just 99 as Mirza took six for 41 in his spell and A Dixon claimed four for 19.

The four wicket victory did not take long to claim as the side who are trying to keep Castle Eden in sight, saw S McCoy open the innings with 39 and G Smith notching and unbeaten 21.

Blackhall were victims of a team putting the wood up to draw a game as they claimed 14 points when Darlington visited at the weekend.

N Feroz hit 60 and Neil Whitworth scored 65 in the NYSD League to post 184 for seven.

A great bowling spell from Jack Ward (three for 29) was not enough as Darlington survived with five wickets spare and 105 scored.

Castle Eden’s title dream could be in danger as their pitch was waterlogged and fears of their home season ending prematurely as Burnmoor close the gap.
