Gary Liddle admits to nerves with Pools future uncertain

HARTLEPOOL United will be deciding on the future of up to a dozen players over the next 24 hours – and Gary Liddle admits it’s a nervous time for those involved.
The 25-year-old is one of several senior stars who will be told his fate by boss Neale Cooper and chief executive Russ Green.
Others include Paul Murray, Adam Boyd, James Brown, Steve Haslam, Colin Larkin, Andy Rafferty and Nolberto Solano, as well as a number of younger players.
Cooper has already signaled his intention to trim the wage bill in order to free funds for his own recruitment.
Liddle, like his team-mates, is well aware of the manager’s plans to overhaul his playing squad, and told SportMail that he is anxious about his own position.
“There are 12 or 13 of us out-of-contract players, including young lads, and we’re all going to find out one way or the other if we get offered something or don’t get offered something,” he explained.
“Hopefully the lads he (Cooper) wants to keep will stay here.
“He has come in and said in the press that he wants his own players and his own team.
“Does that mean we know who will be leaving? None of us have a clue and haven’t been told.
“We will find out in the next couple of days.
“It’s a nervous time and it always is for a professional footballer.
“You’ve got mortgages, bills and cars to pay off and you could be out of a job, but hopefully he will keep most of the lads here.”
Liddle told us last month that he wants to remain at Victoria Park next season.
He did his chances of securing a new deal no harm at all with a strong performance and a stunning strike during Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Charlton Athletic.
That result left Pools 13th in League One after an inconsistent campaign, but Liddle sees hope ahead of the new season.
“We have a good squad, a good core of a team to build on and looking to next year we can get better,” he said.
“We have finished one point off last year, but it’s been a very inconsistent year, at home especially.
“We always wonder if we had got a few more home wins then who knows?
“You look at the teams above us chasing the play-offs and we have matched them, away from home especially.
“There’s no reason why we couldn’t do that next season and be up there.”
