Newcastle United offer £13.5m for Andy Carroll

WANTED MAN: England's Andy Carroll

WANTED MAN: England's Andy Carroll

NEWCASTLE United are ready to pay £13.5million to bring Andy Carroll back to Tyneside.

The striker knows his Liverpool career is all but over following the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as the club’s new boss.

And Carroll, faced with a season on the fringes at Anfield, is understood to be interested in returning to his native Tyneside.

Newcastle are hopeful of signing the 23-year-old on an initial loan agreement with a view to a permanent move.

Liverpool are considering United’s bid, news of which was leaked yesterday.

Newcastle had been looking elsewhere to sign a forward with a £10 million bid for Luuk de Jong having been rejected by FC Twente.

Tellingly, work on other targets has been put on hold while the club awaits a response from Liverpool, who will have to take a huge financial hit with Carroll whatever his destination.

It is unclear at this stage how Carroll’s pay - the England international earns a reported £80,000-a-week - would fit into the club’s tight wage structure.

However, a proportion could be paid by Liverpool over the course of a season-long loan.

United manager Alan Pardew, whose side take on Monaco in Landsberg am Lech tonight, pointedly didn’t rule out a move for Carroll when asked about his situation at a press conference ahead of Newcastle’s tour of Germany and Austria.

“Where he treads the boards, we’ll have to wait and see,” said a guarded Pardew.
